Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
