This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
